Overview
Pelor’s Breath
Common belief states that at the dawn of humanity, Pelor gave his breath providing heat and light to the world. The breath constitutes several continents and many nations. The Realms is positioned to the far east of the Breath, isolated by oceans on each side several weeks travel by boat. The closest nation to the Realms is that of Siofra, the homeland of the Eladrin.
The Realms
The Realms is made up of five principalities; Greyland, Ugus, Tarinon, Barrakusk and Evadne, each with their own Prince and Royal Court. Each operate independently however are overseen by the elected Grand Prince of Grayland from the Capital City, Graymere. The current Grand Prince of The Realms is Garin Thurell. The Realms is controlled by two factions, its military and its faith; which holds more power is debateable. Four deities hold sway over the citizens of The Realms, these are; Heironeous, St. Cuthbert, The Raven Queen and Pelor. In addition to the expected forbidden gods, due to the focus of their portfolios both Mystra, Corellon are both also forbidden. The Realms is an isolated island to the far east of the Breath and shares its landmass with only one other nation, the Shralnar Empire, more commonly referred to as ‘The Chasm.’
Shralnar
Shralnar is known to be a country of harsh terrain and harsher climates, hence the byname the Chasm. Shralnar politics are a complex and changeable system where the ruling power switches often between its noble houses and its members, either through debate, war or intrigue. Above this stands one rule, the Emperors word is law. Shralnarians have always had a strong arcanic bloodline and this plays an important part in the ruling classes; those without magical aptitude are deemed unfit and almost all are kept as slaves or militia (though the difference is often indistinct) by the noble houses.
Brief History
Shralnar and The Realms had been warring nations for close to a millennium, with each new generation bringing with it another invasion or show of strength. This came to an abrupt end almost five hundred years ago when Shralnar’s ruling orders approved the use of a powerful magical artefact specifically designed to destroy all archaic magic within the designated area. Shralnar choose to use this weapon on the capital city of Graymere due to its tactical and political status as well as understanding the impact it will have on the moral of the nation to give such a devastating blow to their capital. The weapons range however stretched much further than just the city and its surrounding military defences, encompassing almost all but the farthest reaches for The Realms as well as some of Shralnar. In addition to this not only did the weapon abolish all magic within its radius, it also attacked all those arcane trained killing all life with arcane energy running through it. Within minutes a shockwave erupted throughout the lands; mages fell to their knees clutching the bleeding eyes before collapsing to the ground, others just dropped cold before they hit the ground, some went insane instantly turning on their own troops before finally being taken down if they didn’t die themselves. Simultaneously items imbued with archaic powers were overwhelmed, most exploding in their hand, sometimes mid-swing tearing their hands apart. The unluckiest of them were those who were currently sleeping in their tents, their weapons hidden under their pillow for protection against possible assassins. Devastation ran through the lands and the world appeared to be plunged into chaos, both armies relying heavily on the magical support leaving both weak and open to attack. Without the support of their Trichotomous Orders, the men of The Realms did not know who to turn to, and then came the churches. Both Heironeous and St. Cuthbert lead the undertaking in rallying the nation, giving hope to the hopeless and bringing them together again with the aid of the nation’s leaders. St. Cuthbert also took the lead in the negotiations taking place over the next several months agreeing the terms of peace between the two warring nations. The terms were agreed; neither would declare hostilities on the other, neither would cross the boundaries of the other without authorization. More significantly to changes The Realms would have to make The Realms agreed to never again teach the archaic arts to the citizens, to close down all schools, no spellcaster will be allowed to take up residents within The Realms and any visitors to the lands must be recorded, monitored and were not allowed to utilize their talents within its boundary until penalty of deportation or death. St. Cuthbert agreed to take under their doctrines the charge of keeping this true and have done so for the last five hundred years.
