It has been suggested that we may want to consider merging with the Card Trading Society to have a society for all games related societies. "One society to rule them all??"
It would not hurt to ask PGS if they would be wanting to merge as well and be under one banner. The reasoning for this suggestion is that there are several people in both these societies that are members of Hobbits. This merger would obviosly also make our society grow and prosper.
In the event of such a merger.....there is a need to change the name as "Hobbits" will not project what the society is. There has already been several suggestions.
Phil suggested something involving UWSXXXXX, Paul suggested GASP (Gaming association students paisley??) I suggested Paisley Gamers.
More suggestions on a possible merger and name change will be welcomed!!

I like the idea of the merge with the card games socity as there is considarable overlap and I don't think thier budget demand is very high.
Mergeing with PSG or whatever its called may be a bad idea as we will be useing most of the budget for nationals and if they have a high budget demand then we may have balancing problems secondly there is little overlap of members something like 2 or 3 as far as I am aware and the 2 I now for dffinate don't really come to Hobbits.

The different societies have already got their budgets this year so it wont be a problem...and then there will be a different budget next year where we will be given more money as a consequence of a possible merger.....
....Tim, Claire and Ben are roleplaying and think some of them might be coming to Nationals and that is a few of them.
To give you an example....Leiscter has a society called GameSoc which is roleplaying, wargaming, card gaming, boardgaming in addition to console games.

I doubt we will get a great deal more money from the mearge and to be honest we currently going through enough changes as it is. I can see a lot of problems arising from the merge and while there way be gain Steven is awefully buzy at the moment without having to resolve any problems we will face when we merge with the gamming group. I think its a good idea just not the best time.
We are supposed to raise a third of our budget with fund raising. If we get all the membership money then we will still need to raise around £250. I don't know how ligitamit the gaming group are and they will probably not like it if they do not have membership fees and then we start imposing them. If they are above board and raise thier 3rd of budget and then we come along with this hugh gap they will probably not like it.

Maybe we should just ask what they think?
If there's member overlap though, then I'm not sure what advantage a merger would give. Surely those people will continue to do what they're already doing and those who are Hobbits only members will continue to do Hobbitsy things?

I don't see the point in a merge with PGS. It will only cause confusion in what I view as 2 separate mediums of entertainment.

Still...a merger with the card trading society would probably be good; After all...card gaming is one of the categories at nationals and can easily have a rightful place in our society.
There would not be too many changes for us to consider if a merge is possible....and this burden will not fall on Steven's shoulder. If there is a need I can organize the merge....Steven will have his say about this of course...and we need to ask everyone in the Card Trading Society if they would like to merge with us.
Budget is not reallu an issue...until next year's budget proposals. We coul always find out what budget they have already. If the budget is not a lot anyway then we could componsate when this problem arises next year. The natural course would be that we would include the expences for the CTS in our budget and the union will have to stretch and give us more than they gave us this year.
As for the PGS....they don't really have a large budget anyway...I think they put in expences for a pizza night last year. Even yhough PGS is a different society from us it still involves games and a few of the members in PGS are in Hobbits already.

I never got why Card Gaming was a different society anyway. There was always a lot of Card Gamers who came along to Hobbits to play and then, suddenly there's a different society; just seemed a little odd and stand-offish.

I would agree with trying to get the trading card society on board as it would possibly open up new members to both groups. As Orkney said there is considerable overlap. I would leave PGS out of it as they are an entirely separate entity.

I always pushed for a name change. Hobbits just sounds so lame, with all due respect to the founders.

At the current moment there is alot going on at once this is the first time in a few years we have a forum. Also with a change at the helm of hobbits it is alot of change.
I have nothing against merging with the card gamers. To be fair most of us play card games of some sort. I'd maybe suggest the idea is put to one side till next year. Means we can establish ourselves first and organise our budget for that year coming.
Name change and i admit the Paisley hobbits is not an ideal name. Though unless we can all agree on a better name it's what we've got. You cannot just change it overnight because one person thinks Paisley Gamers sounds neat. Or that GASP which does work as a name, would instead make us all gaspers! If we do want to change the name, suggestions should be taken and disscussed. Votes should then be made for these suggestions. Also if your looking to merge with the card gaming society we may have to see what they'd like the merged name to be too.
This is why the merger should be dealt with first and the name change to take place next year.

So is the general consensus saying that we live PGS out of this society, but we will negotiate with CTS for a possible merger??
So who knows the members of the CTS? I think we should have rep on both societies being the point of contact for discussions on a possible merger?
The name change may or may not be important....we could again talk with the CTS and ask what they would like?? We would have suggestions from everyone and then take a general vote on the best name.
If the merger were to happen then all of the members of CTS will be eligable for going to Nationals as well. We could definately use card gamers for Nationals.
