....just so there is no confusion....
The name change is in case of a merger....if a merger does not happen then there is no need to change the name.

Well I dunno what reasons you mentioned but I like the continuity our name gives us. Plus it doesn't seem to have put off many new members this year.

I dont see why we cant just absorb TCG games into Hobbits and keep the name and just grow bigger like some sort of Gaming Amoeba that consumes all games, MWahahahah!
but yea i like the name now used to think needed a change but love it now.
If it aint broke dont fix it.

it is broke though.
1. it puts people off
2. it confuses people
3. and generally we are looked down at as a club with the union (partly because of the first two reasons)
and i dont see how the fact we managed to get a few more members this year is a valid argument as to say there is no issues with the club, the club is (as im regularly reminded) the oldest club in existence, so the fact that some people joined this year means squat.
We should be expecting several new members each year and should be the most known and most respected club in the union by now (and we are most deff not)

Well that is changing and I can't see a problem with the name currently. I doubt any other name would have fared better. We don't advertise ourselves well and our website as advertised by the Union website is defunct. We need more than posters a good website not just the forum. Advertisement of the game systems we play. The Dark Heresy and Traveller books on the tables at the Fresher’s Fair pulled a lot of people in especially Dark Heresy. If we could get an advertisement in the prospectus that would be great as many people do not bring their Warhammer and then find they should have.

It is true that we do gain new members every year....but this year we have had more new members than previous years.
The name of our society does not really explain what we do though and that is a definate disadvantage.
When it comes to image...I do believe that our soicety are being more respected....the sports and societies president at the union has been good with communicating with us and actually making an effort to understand what we do without prejudice or being condescending.
We can't win them all, but a small win is a step in the right direction. We are the biggest society aside from the sports societies and that is an achievement in itself.

None of the suggestions I have heard so far have given a better description of what we do. An acronym is pointless if you want the name to be clear, and if we describe what we do in the name it becomes too long.
Hobbits at least has some direct connection.

How? We don't even play LOTR!
The only distinct connection is the halfling...and we're then talking third cousin of a third cousin ....

Speaking from the point of view where I had never even concidered role playing as something people actually did before I met Craig - the name "Paisley Hobbits" drew a perfect picture of fantasy, adventure and escape.
I've always liked the name - it's always made sense to me as an outsider as to what roleplaying is.
If you think of it from a marketing standpoint: HOBBITS draws everyones eyes to it (more or less EVERYONE knows what a Hobbit is) - then the tagline "wargaming & roleplaying society" draws the attention of the right people. See what I mean?
